Where to Eat in Agios Stefanos and Arillas: Our Honest Guide

Knowing where to eat in Agios Stefanos and Arillas makes a real difference to a week here. This is a quiet corner of northwest Corfu — there is no long strip of competing restaurants and no need to book a different place every night. What there is instead is a small, dependable collection of tavernas and one genuinely special headland bar, all within walking distance of the villa. This is our honest guide to the ones we send guests to, and how to get the best out of each.

Akrotiri Lounge

Akrotiri Lounge is the one to know about. It is a five-minute walk from the villa, set on the headland that separates Agios Stefanos from Arillas, with the sea on three sides. The setting does a lot of the work — there are few better places in this part of the island to watch the sun drop into the Ionian — but the kitchen holds up its end too.

The food is modern Greek: well-sourced fish, sharing plates, a few more ambitious mains, and cocktails that are taken seriously. It works equally well for a relaxed lunch after the beach and for a proper evening out. The one piece of advice we give every guest is to book the terrace in advance if you want to be seated for sunset in July and August. The best tables go quickly, and arriving on spec at eight o'clock in peak season is the one way to be disappointed by a place that otherwise rarely disappoints.

The Agios Stefanos Beachfront Tavernas

Down at the beach, a five-minute walk in the other direction, a line of traditional tavernas runs along the back of the sand. These are the family-run places that have been here for years, and they are exactly what you want from a Greek beach taverna: fresh fish from the day's catch, grilled meat, mezze plates to share, cold beer and house wine, and absolutely no sense of hurry.

The atmosphere is informal and the cooking is honest rather than refined, which is the whole point. Lunch here has a habit of stretching into the afternoon. In the evenings the same tavernas take on a warmer, busier feel as people settle in for dinner, often with the sound of the water a few metres away. None of them require a reservation outside the very peak weeks, though it never hurts to ask in the morning if you have a large group.

Arillas Village

For a change of scene, Arillas is 10 to 15 minutes along the coastal path, and the village has a wider spread of options along its seafront. The mood is the same easy, unhurried northwest-Corfu feeling, but there are more bars and tavernas to choose between, and the west-facing beach means the sunset views from a dinner table are excellent.

It is worth the short walk at least once or twice during a week's stay, particularly if you want a slightly livelier evening or simply a different menu. The walk back along the path under the stars is part of the appeal.

A Few Practical Tips

A handful of things make eating out here smoother:

  • Carry some cash. The larger places take cards, but several of the smaller family tavernas are cash-only or prefer cash, and it saves any awkwardness at the end of a long meal.
  • Book ahead for Akrotiri at peak sunset. It is the one place where a reservation genuinely matters in July and August. Everywhere else is far more relaxed.
  • Don't over-plan. The tavernas are forgiving about timing and group size, and half the pleasure here is deciding where to eat over a drink by the pool rather than weeks in advance.
  • Walk where you can. Everything in this guide is within a comfortable stroll of the villa, which means no one has to stay sober to drive.
  • Eating In: The Private Chef Option

Some of the best evenings of a villa holiday happen at the villa itself. If you would rather not go out — or you want to mark a particular occasion — we can arrange a private chef to cook in the villa kitchen. The chef prepares Greek and international menus, works around your group's preferences, and leaves the kitchen as they found it. It is booked on request and priced separately from the villa rate, so contact us at the time of enquiry if you would like current pricing.

A chef night pairs particularly well with the terrace and the pool: drinks as the sun goes down, dinner served outside, and nowhere to be afterwards. For larger groups it often works out as the most relaxed evening of the week.

If you would like us to suggest restaurants based on your group, or to arrange a chef or a table at Akrotiri before you arrive, our concierge team is happy to help. Get in touch when you book your stay, and have a look at our Experiences page for more on the area.
